Ask anyone who knows Phuket well and they will tell you the same thing: December is when the island shines. The rains have passed, the Andaman Sea turns glassy and blue, and the yachting season is in full swing. Here is why this is the month to be here.
December marks the start of Phuket’s dry season. The northeast monsoon brings settled weather, with warm days around 30°C, low humidity by tropical standards and long stretches of sunshine. On the west coast, the sea calms and visibility improves, which is exactly why captains and divers count down to this time of year.
With calm water on the Andaman side, December is the moment the region’s most beautiful cruising grounds come into their own. Phang Nga Bay’s limestone towers, the beaches of Phi Phi and the clear waters of the Similan Islands are all within reach, and the bays of the west coast become ideal anchorages.
It is also a month of sailing tradition. The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, traditionally held in early December, brings international crews to the island and sets the tone for the season.
Mid-December belongs to Kata Rocks. On Friday 18 December, the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous Brunch welcomes guests by land and by sea to The Clubhouse for an afternoon of exceptional food, premium free-flow, fashion and music. On Saturday 19 December, the Kata Rocks Poker Run sends crews rallying between five locations, before an awards evening back on the headland.
Together, they are the most stylish way to spend a weekend on the Andaman coast.
December is Phuket’s most popular month, so plan early. Villas, yacht charters and event tickets are in demand as the festive season approaches. Reserving early gives you the widest choice and the calmest start to your holiday.
